What Does a Digital Marketing Agency Actually Do?

A plain-English breakdown of what digital marketing agencies actually offer, how they differ, and where Fieldstone fits into that picture.

By Fieldstone Digital

"Digital marketing agency" gets used as a catch-all for a lot of different businesses doing very different work. Some run paid ads exclusively. Some are really web design shops with "marketing" in the name. Some manage social media content and nothing else. If you're trying to figure out whether you need one, or whether the one you're talking to actually does what you need, it helps to know what's actually inside that label.

The core services most digital marketing agencies offer

Most agencies pull from some combination of:

  • SEO — improving how a website ranks in search results, through technical fixes, content, and off-site authority building
  • Website design and development — building or maintaining the site itself
  • Google Business Profile management — posts, review responses, photos, and category optimization for local search and Google Maps
  • Paid advertising — running and optimizing Google Ads, Meta Ads, or similar
  • Social media management — posting, content creation, and community management on social platforms
  • Content marketing — blog posts, email newsletters, and other content meant to build authority and generate leads
  • Review and reputation management — systems for generating and responding to customer reviews

Very few agencies genuinely do all of these well. Most specialize in two or three and either skip the rest or subcontract it.

What makes agencies different from each other

Beyond which services they offer, agencies vary on things that matter more than the service list:

  • How they price. Flat monthly retainers, project-based fees, percentage-of-ad-spend, or hourly — each creates different incentives. A percentage-of-ad-spend model, for example, gives the agency no reason to ever recommend spending less.
  • Whether they show you the data. Some agencies report in plain numbers you can verify yourself (rankings, traffic, leads). Others report in vague summaries that are hard to check against reality.
  • Contract length. Month-to-month versus a 12-month lock-in changes how much leverage you have if the work isn't working.
  • Who actually does the work. Some agencies do everything in-house. Others subcontract to overseas freelancers with no relationship to the agency beyond a task queue. Both can produce good or bad work, but you should know which one you're paying for.

Where Fieldstone fits

Fieldstone doesn't do everything on that list. There's no paid advertising management and no general social media content service. What Fieldstone does:

  • An independent, graded audit of your website, SEO, AI visibility, and brand presence — the diagnostic step, done first and sold separately from anything else
  • Fieldstone Build: unlimited web design and development for a flat monthly fee
  • Fieldstone Profile: Google Business Profile audits and ongoing management
  • Fieldstone Review Growth: automated review requests and response management

The audit is deliberately the starting point for all of it, not an upsell tucked at the end of a sales call. You get a real, scored answer to "where do I actually stand" before anyone asks you to buy anything else.

How to figure out what you actually need

Before hiring anyone, it's worth knowing where you're actually weak. A generic "we do everything" pitch is hard to evaluate without a baseline.
